I experienced something very strange this week. I was giving a speech at one of my Toastmasters clubs. It was an inspirational speech - uplift the spirit. A story of 3 caterpillars. I had been writing the speech for 2 weeks, finally finishing it the night before. I had put a lot of expectation and pressure on myself for this speech. Not only that, but a number of things didn't go to plan. I spent 30 mins extra at the dentist, left my video camera at work, and was running later than I wanted.
Well, the strangest thing was that when it came time to give the speech I was barely nervous. I am not going to go as far as say I was in the moment, but it is the closest I have been. I think part of what happened is that I have given a few speeches recently that have stretched me. Very little preparation (none in the case of the backwards meeting) and very little when filling in for an open role.
And it appears to be helping!
To me the message is clear. Speak often and challenge yourself as much as you can.
