Improv Emotion

I was thinking some more about improv and another thing struck me.

Quite often in the scenes we are having a conversation, rather than an experience.  We talk through the scene.  We may even act out some things in the scene if we are good.

A recent ref coached us by asking one of the players in a scene, "how does that make you feel?"  He seemed to ask it a lot.  When we are in the scene, we are often caught up in what to say next without thinking about how the last line would make us feel.  It is ok to "yes, and" the person, but if they just told you they lost their job, had a baby, cured cancer, etc., you had better show some emotion!

Actors know ahead of time what emotion they are about to portray.  In improv, you need to empathize with unexpected situations.  This is where a crazy thought crept into my head...

Improv is like allowing yourself to say and feel the things that society restricts us from every day.  If someone pisses you off in a scene, let them know, even if it is your boss.  If you want to steal a babies candy, go ahead.  If something makes you happy when it shouldn't, don't hide it - celebrate it.  THIS is what makes improv fun!
